What Happens To The Skin As We Age?

The skin, being the largest organ of the human body, undergoes continual changes as we age and understanding this process is crucial for developing effective age management strategies.

In this blog, we will explore what happens at cellular and structural levels and what we can do to counteract it.

Physiological Changes to the Skin

Firstly, we will look at a number of changes that occur physiologically with age. These include:

  1. Breakdown of Collagen and Elastin: Ageing is often characterised by a decline in collagen and elastin, essential proteins responsible for skin elasticity and firmness. Collagen fibres become disorganised, resulting in a loss of structural integrity. Elastin fibres, crucial for skin flexibility, also face degradation, contributing to skin sagging and wrinkle formation.
  2. Cellular Changes:At the cellular level, a decrease in the rate of cell turnover leads to a dull complexion and delayed wound healing. The decline in the production of essential components like hyaluronic acid results in decreased skin hydration and moisture retention.
  3. Dermal Thinning:Ageing skin experiences a reduction in the thickness of the dermal layer, further exacerbating the loss of volume. This thinning contributes to the prominence of fine lines and wrinkles.

Signs of Ageing: Lines + Wrinkles

Ageing presents in several different ways, but lines and wrinkles and the most commonly reported age-related concerns.

  • Formation of Fine Lines:

Fine lines are often the result of repeated facial expressions, sun exposure, and the breakdown of collagen. Dynamic wrinkles, caused by muscle movement, become more apparent with age due to the loss of collagen and reduced skin elasticity.

  • Static Wrinkles:

Over time, dynamic wrinkles can evolve into static wrinkles, visible even at rest. This transformation is influenced by the cumulative effects of sun exposure, environmental factors, and intrinsic ageing processes.

Age Management Solutions

  • Restore Volume Loss:

Addressing volume loss can restore a more youthful appearance. We offer consultations for treatments that can help to add volume, smooth lines, and rejuvenate the skin.

  • Minimise Appearance of Wrinkles:

Commonly used in the forehead and around the eye area, treatments that minimise the appearance of wrinkles and static lines are another popular solution.

  • Stimulate Collagen:

Treatments that actively promote collagen production can also be used for age management. There are a number of options available to improve firmness and elasticity.

Please note, all medical cosmetic procedures carry risks and must be discussed in a consultation prior.
